Electric Octavia serves Prague Castle

5/4/2012
ŠKODA Octavia Green E Line proves its suitability for everyday use in service for Prague Castle administration. Daily courier trips in focus. ŠKODA electric vehicle covers between 40 and 140 kilometres per day.
A representative of ŠKODA’s electric vehicle test fleet has been dispatched to a mission on historic terrain effective immediately. The administration of Prague Castle is now using an Octavia Green E Line for daily courier trips in Prague. This involves the E-Octavia mainly shuttling between the castle and government and parliament offices.

Today, Prague Castle, which dates back to the ninth century, is the seat of the president of the Czech Republic. The Octavia Green E Line will be driving up to 140 kilometres per day at the service of the castle. The white “castle Octavia” is one of ten electrically operated that have been in practical testing since the beginning of the year. The aim of the test operation is to gather practical experience regarding electric traction.

“We are happy that Prague Castle has given us this excellent opportunity to test the Octavia Green E Line in practice,” says Petr Pečenka, head of region Czech Republic. “With the castle sited on top of Hradčany hill, the car will need to master demanding climbs and descents. This is why we expect this trial to generate precious insight for further development of electric drive technology,” Pečenka added.

“Government puts a high priority on environmental protection. Electric vehicles promise zero emissions and noiseless operation, but also low operating costs,” says Ivo Velíšek, chief administrator of Prague Castle. “The Octavia Green E Line will let us test this technology of the future under realistic conditions and gather dedicated experiences.”

The car will mainly be used for daily courier trips between the castle, government offices, the Czech National Bank, Parliament, the Senate and the Foreign Office. Trips to state agencies and embassies are also planned. In addition, the e-courier service will provide a link to Lány castle near Rakovník. This will involve the Octavia Green E Line in clocking up between 40 and 140 kilometres per day. Three drivers from the castle administration will take turns at the wheel of the white estate car.

The Octavia Green E Line draws its energy from a lithium ion battery, with 180 lithium ion cells supplying the electric motor with a constant power of 60 kW. A range of 150 kilometres means is enough to satisfy the needs of most commuters in Europe. The battery block is located under the middle and hindmost floor and partly in the boot.

Five seats are available for passengers
The Octavia Green E Line is based on the Octavia Combi. Thanks to its modular chassis, the series model is ideally suited to house a battery, electric controller units and the electric motor. The motor puts out a peak power of 85 kW. Maximum torque of 270 Nm is available from the start. This agility is ideal for city driving. The Octavia Green E Line will accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in only twelve seconds, its top speed is 135 kph.

ŠKODA’s activities in the field of electric mobility are an important part of a wide-ranging drive and fuel strategy. As part of this, ŠKODA is foreseeing cars being powered by a mix of different technologies mid-term. This will also involve further optimisation efforts on ŠKODA’s highly efficient TDI and TSI engines and their transmissions.
